OVERVIEW

Applications:

The instrument is used to measure the resistance value of the asphalt pavement marking, stone, or other material (specimen) and to assess anti-sliding ability of the road and the road surface material (specimen) in wet or humid conditions. Used to determine friction coefficient on flat, cambered or gradient road surface like highway pavement, city road pavement, airport track.

Working Principle:

The apparatus is quite basic in operation. It is robustly designed and does not easily go out of calibration, if treated properly.

It is a dynamic pendulum impact apparatus. The instrument is developed according to the theory of ” pendulum’s potential loss is equal to work caused by the rubber sheet, attached at the end of pendulum arm, overcoming the friction force when it is sliding on the pavement”.

Instrument Operation:

The process is quite simple – The pendulum is released from the horizontal position by a quick release button. It swings down with uniform force each time, and the rubber slider attached at the bottom end of the pendulum arm, contacts the road surface for a fixed length.

The degree to which the pendulum will rise up the calibration on the left-hand side of the image, will be dependent on the friction / resistance, the rubber slider meets on the road surface. The more the friction / resistance, the less the pendulum will rise and the higher will be the value of Skid Resistance Value (SRV) of the road surface and vice versa.
