Rapid Moisture Meter – Working Principle (Step by Step)

1. Objective

The Rapid Moisture Meter is used to quickly determine the moisture content of soil, sand, or aggregate at site or in the laboratory.

2. Sample Preparation

  • A known weight of moist soil/aggregate is taken.

  • The sample is placed inside the pressure vessel of the moisture meter.

3. Addition of Reagent

  • A measured quantity of calcium carbide reagent is added to the vessel.

  • Calcium carbide reacts only with free moisture present in the sample.

4. Sealing the Vessel

  • The pressure vessel is airtight sealed.

  • This ensures that all gas produced remains inside the chamber.

5. Chemical Reaction

  • Calcium carbide reacts with water in the sample:

    CaC₂ + 2H₂O → C₂H₂ (Acetylene gas) + Ca(OH)₂

  • The amount of acetylene gas generated is directly proportional to the moisture content.

6. Pressure Development

  • The generated gas increases internal pressure inside the vessel.

  • Pressure rise depends on the quantity of moisture present in the sample.

7. Pressure Measurement

  • The pressure is indicated on a calibrated pressure gauge.

  • The gauge is directly marked in percentage moisture content.

8. Reading the Result

  • The meter is shaken gently to complete the reaction.

  • Once pressure stabilizes, the moisture content (%) is read directly from the gauge.

9. Completion

  • After noting the reading, gas is safely released.

  • The sample residue is removed and the instrument is cleaned for next use.
